Sally Swanson Architects During interviews with SSA residents of the Yountville Veterans Home expressed their desire for a home rather than an institution. Likewise, administrators wanted to create an environment that was more inviting and warm, as well as considerably more safe for the residents. The finished project is distinguished by how successfully the concepts of Universal Design have been integrated into the overall design solution. Acknowledging the residents' varying physical ability, SSA introduced dignity into the bathroom facilities. Throughout the home, patterns in finish materials like carpet and tile create a common language through which the design communicates important perceptible information. Items such as a decorative chair molding that doubles as a hand rail, or carpet designs that also serve to clarify disorienting spaces, display compassion for the residents at the same time as they advance the overall design aesthetic. These creative dual-function design details also helped SSA deliver the project well within the tight state budget. Scope of Services Budget Photo: exterior view of Yountville Veterans Home |
