Sally Swanson Architects SSA worked closely with Yerba Buena High School to plan and execute a 5-phase modernization project funded by local bond and State modernization money that seeks to provide a 21st-century educational atmosphere. The first phase has produced a renovated Science Building with a dozen fully outfitted science labs and classrooms, a new computer center, plus mechanical and seismic upgrades. Redesigning this 1960's building from top to bottom, SSA conceived of a facility that reflects the influence of technology on education, both in its technological features and its design vocabulary. Applying the principles of Universal Design, we developed a baseline educational palette for the classrooms and allowed faculty members to adapt their own space to their specific needs on an individual basis. Subsequent phases will benefit from a high level of faculty involvement, both in concept development and in the application of design details. Plans will affect all existing buildings and include the construction of a student plaza and a multi-purpose assembly building. Construction has been phased to involve one building at a time, with portable classrooms providing temporary space. Scope of Services Budget Photo: classroom |
