Sally Swanson Architects The Vallejo-Benicia Courthouse renovation encompassed the reorganization of administrative areas and public space adjacent to the courts to allow for a new ticketing department. Within the limited scope of services, which also called for a fiber-optic upgrade, SSA was able to add humanizing flourishes that enhance the experience of the building's users. We added a formal lobby that provides a place for public interface with the courts. A large vaulted skylight above the ticketing department floods with natural light what might otherwise be an emotionally unpleasant space. Other details such as patterned floors and systems furniture design add to the enjoyment of people working and visiting the new space. In creating efficient new facilities for the county, SSA was likewise efficient, staying programmatically on target and diligently within budget.
