Universal Design

For SSA, Inc. (SSA), Universal Design begins with a conscious effort to imagine the user in the broadest, most inclusive terms. In our practice, we examine how all persons, not simply persons with disabilities, interact with their surroundings, and envision a design responsive to the greatest common denominators. In this way, we believe design can act to equalize the experience of all users. Rather than applying a standard inventory of access features, SSA seeks to permeate the entire design, and design process, with a high level of sensitivity to the varied needs of all users.

As a leader in access compliant design and the interpretation of California access code requirements, we are guided by the seven principles of Universal Design formalized by the Center for Universal Design at North Carolina State University. They are:
•Equitable use:
Provide the same means for all users, and avoid segregating or stigmatizing anyone.
•Flexibility in use:
Accommodate a wide range of individual preferences and abilities.
•Simple and intuitive:
Provide for use that is easy to understand regardless of the user's specific experience, knowledge, language skills, or current concentration level.
•Perceptible Information:
Effectively communicate necessary information to the user, regardless of ambient conditions or the user's sensory abilities.
•Size and space for approach and use:
Provide appropriate size and space for approach, reach, manipulation, and use regardless of the user's body size, posture, or mobility.
•Tolerance for error:
Minimize hazards and the adverse consequences of accidental or unintended action.
•Low physical effort:
Enable efficient and comfortable use with a minimum of fatigue.

SSA is distinguished by having applied these concepts to the creation of real-world architectural solutions. In recognition of our accomplishments, both the California Coalition for Adequate School Housing (C.A.S.H.) and the Community College Facility Coalition (CCFC) have asked SSA to present seminars on the application of Universal Design.
