Sally Swanson Architects SSA collaborated with HTI on two Palo Alto elementary schools as part of a district-wide school modernization effort. Both schools, the Walter Hays and Escondido Elementary schools, underwent a selective modernization that included the reorganization of existing library space, the addition of new classrooms, reading rooms and computer centers, as well as the introduction of new sources of natural light. SSA was able to bring new life to these facilities through the inventive use of form and space. The designs add elements such as domes and clerestory windows and convert underused outdoor spaces into indoor spaces. In reference to nearby Stanford University, traditional campus concepts, such as quadrangles and towers, are accentuated to add cohesion to the plan. SSA diligently pursued parental outreach and even enlisted student participation in the creation of design elements and motifs. Scope of Services Budget Photo: escondito school exterior |
