Sally Swanson Architects
Mountain Elementary School

Soquel, CA

For this rural elementary school campus, SSA felt the project's central challenge was to accommodate multiple, specific functions within a limited space. The design solution features complete accessibility upgrades and a scheme that incorporates outdoor areas as lively, usable program spaces while perceptively reallocating spaces within the building itself. A policy of parent and faculty outreach generated broad involvement in the project, and helped lead, in the design, to a reinforced connection between the school and the community at large through the creation of shared spaces. In the end, each classroom was modernized to create a more effective learning environment, fully compliant with state guidelines.
