Sally Swanson Architects SSA was selected to renovate the James Hall Auditorium, owned and operated by the Metropolitan State Hospital. The historic building in the Arts-and-Crafts style was in a desperate state of disrepair. Earthquake damage and years of neglect left this once attractive building in need of seismic retrofitting, asbestos abatement, and access compliance upgrades, in addition to new waterproofing and a mechanical overhaul. To frame the completely upgraded mechanical systems and enhanced audio-visual capabilities, SSA invented a modern interpretation of the original Arts and Crafts style that would enliven the building's ample interior. SSA restored historic fixtures, molding, and other stand-out features, added a contemporary tile design accenting key elements of the space, and composed a handsome color and materials palette. The new, open-floor auditorium has become a favorite for a number of community functions, from high school formals to lectures and performances.
